Wii Video Game Review

Wii Mercury Meltdown Revolution

June 2008 - By Erich V

The Good: Very creative and well crafted game. Innovative gameplay, plus the mercury blob can dance pretty good!

The Bad: Slow action. No multiplayer. Party games are locked.

Yawn!
This game generally has received very good reviews. It has a rating of 8.5 out of 10 at Gamespot and 4.5 stars out of 5 at Amazon. In all honesty though I found this game to be very slow moving, not addictive at all and just plain boring. After playing great puzzle games like Dr. Mario, Lolo, Bomberman, Kirby's Avalanche, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, and even the original Marble Madness I can not see why this game has received such high marks. No matter how clever an idea is, or how well that idea is transferred into a game, if it is not fun to play then it is a bad idea after all.

Maybe it was something in my childhood that jaded me against rolling around blobs of mercury. I did once take a thermometer apart and fooled with the mercury inside, but I do not recall this as a bad experience. The game is a little like mini-golf, and a little like The Adventures of Lolo for the NES and Wii Virtual Console or Bomberman for the SNES in that you have to figure out how to complete each level. The graphics are fun and cute but I was unable to play this game for more than about 1/2 hour before I was so bored that I just spent the rest of the game trying to see how fast I could roll my mercury off the edge of the game's many interesting contraptions.

Mercury Meltdown Revolution has innovative controls, makes good use of the motion control for controlling the blob movement. The graphics are well done. The music is pleasant, however, I would not recommend this game due to the lack of multiplayer mode, and the rather boring gameplay. To be fair, perhaps I should have given it more than a half hour trial, but I just got the new HULK game and it was calling to me from the shelf.
