Wii Video Game Review

Wii Boom Blox

June 2008 - By Erich V

The Good: One of the best party games available for the Wii. Huge game with tons of levels and game modes. Excellent game control.

The Bad: Can be a bit too easy to beat. Game addiction does wear off when playing single player.

Yank my block like you know I want it to be yanked.
Originality in video games is what we all look for, but in most cases originality comes with a price.... yes, that's right, shovelware. Boom Blox, on the other hand, is a shining beacon in the world of video game originality. Perfect game control, awesome music and graphics plus more options and levels than you can shake a block at. This and all the nice touches like background animated "Blox" animals make this one of the best original game ideas to come along since, uh........... since the last great original game idea!

Steven Spielberg said of this game; I am a gamer myself, and I really wanted to create a video game that I could play with my kids, Boom Blox features an enormous amount of fun challenges and cool scenarios for your kids to solve or for you to master together. Although this sounds a bit like standard, substandard game hype, Boom Blox does excel as far as multiplayer and all age accessibility go. It's easy for anybody to join in, and actually, pretty easy to master as well.

Big, big, big. That best describes this game. There are hundreds of levels and ten tons of ways to knock stuff over. Much stuff can be unlocked for even more throwing, shooting and yanking fun. There are multiplayer games for up to 4 players, plus Boom Blox includes tons of single player challenges as well as some story modes. There is strategy involved in how you knock blox over, however, I would not consider this to be an intense "Tetrisy" kind of game. It is easy, yet you can decide how challenging it will be depending on how well you would like to score.

Gameplay: Well, basically you knock stuff over. In multiplayer mode you all take turns. Some blox are worth more points than others, some blox explode, some only explode when they touch another blox, and some blox do nothing. There are versions of the game like defend your pile of Blox and a sort of Jenga and a reverse Jenga game where you can strategically knock over the big point blox while trying to keep your opponent from scoring. Because it is turned based in multiplay the game does progress slowly and there is strategy involved with how you knock the blox over.
Wii Boom Blox

Great sound and graphics, awesome control, and hundreds of levels make this a great game. Boom Blox is at it's best in multiplayer competitive mode, particularly with 4 players. There is much attention to detail, including reactions from the background "Blox" animals that give this game a rich atmosphere. This game may not be for everyone, but if you like square animals and brilliantly knocking stuff over then this would probably be your first choice for the Wii.
